How to Increase Your Education Financial Aide

Furman welcome center
If you’re like many other students in America, you rely heavily on financial aid to continue or to start your education. If you’ve recently filled out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and were disappointed with the amount allotted to you, don’t panic. There are many things you can try to increase the amount of financial aid you’ll receive and to make your school dreams a reality.

Look at All Your Options

First of all, you’ll want to determine if the financial aid decision you received was due to the school you chose or just to your own personal financial state. You can determine this by applying to more than one school and comparing the financial aid packages offered by each institution.

If you find that one particular school is offering you less than the others, you can either choose a school with a higher financial aid offering, or, if your heart is set on the high-priced school, you can set up a meeting with a financial aid adviser.

Show the adviser documentation that you were offered more financial aid elsewhere. Sometimes, they’ll be able to work something out to match the other schools’ offerings. It could also be that the school made some kind of error and will realize it when presented with this documentation. No matter what, it’s worth a try!

Go Through the Appeals Process

If you’re not getting any answers from the school of your choice, you may want to go through the appeals process. Most schools have an appeals protocol in place, through which you can attempt to prove that you deserve more financial aid than the school is offering and potentially get the school to overturn its original decision.

If you want to go through this process, contact the financial aid office at the school of your choice and determine what you need to do to get the ball rolling.

Search for Scholarships and More

Finally, recognize that there are tons of scholarships out there. Some are small and others are large, but the more you can find and apply for, the better your chances of increasing your financial aid.

Look at scholarships offered by your institution as well as outside scholarships, which you can find by searching online and networking with others. Some scholarships have grade requirements that you must keep up once awarded. Others are only given to people who meet certain other requirements. However, look at them all and apply for all the ones that you are eligible for. If you do this enough, you’re bound to get some money for college, even if it happens little by little.

As you can see, your dream of an education is not impossible! It might be a little harder than you bargained for, but it’s not impossible. Keep pushing and try these tips, and eventually, you will find a way to pay for school!
